Longtime NHLer reportedly refuses sign a professional tryout, will only sign guaranteed deal
Despite reports earlier this summer suggesting he was leaning towards retirement, longtime National Hockey League forward Paul Stastny is looking to play this coming season, but has one stipulation.
According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, Stastny is seeking a guaranteed deal with an NHL franchise and isn't interested in signing a professional tryout contract.
Friedman added that the 37-year-old isn't wanting to prove his worth to a team on a PTO by going to training camp and playing in preseason games and feels like he should get an actual contract.
In 1,145 career games with the Colorado Avalanche, St. Louis Blues, Winnipeg Jets, Vegas Golden Knights and Carolina Hurricanes, Stastny has 822 points (293 goals, 529 assists), 500 penalty minutes and is a plus-54. He's also contributed 73 points in 118 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
It'll be interesting to see what options come Stastny's way in the coming weeks, as if an NHL team does come calling, it'll more than likely be a one-year contract at league minimum where he'll play in a bottom-six role.
