Bruins buying out contract of defenceman, may be clearing space for Bertuzzi
According to Ty Anderson of 98.5FM The Sports Hub, the Boston Bruins are buying out the contract of defenceman Mike Reilly.
"The Bruins are buying out the final year of Mike Reilly's contract. The buyout will free up $2.66M in cap space for 2023-24, $1.33M penalty in 2024-25." Anderson said.
Reilly, 29, has spent parts of the last three seasons with the Boston Bruins, appearing in 71 games during the 2021-22 campaign, but was in the American Hockey League with Providence for the majority of 2022-23.
In 36 games for Providence this season, the Chicago native had 26 points (seven goals, 19 assists), 34 penalty minutes and was a plus-three. He also appeared in ten games for Boston, putting up one assist and two penalty minutes.
Buying out Reilly's contract, combined with the Taylor Hall trade earlier this week, could signal that the Bruins are going to make one final push to sign pending UFA forward Tyler Bertuzzi, who is set to hit the open market at noon ET tomorrow.
Mark Allred of the Black 'N Gold podcast is reporting that the Bruins and Bertuzzi are in agreement when it comes to salary, but are still butting heads when it comes to the term.
"Word floating around is the #NHLBruins and soon to be free agent Tyler Bertuzzi have an agreement on salary per season but no common ground on contract length."
It's safe to say that the Boston Bruins are going to be one of the most interesting teams to watch over the weekend.
