An insider has provided some much needed clarification on how the NHL is handling the 4 remaining players that have left their teams
Yesterday, shockwaves were sent around the hockey world when 5 players were told to turn themselves into the police in London, Ontario. This of course is following 4 National Hockey League players asking for and being granted leave for personal reasons'. Something that a lot of people think isn't just a coincidence.
Now, according to Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli, this is what the NHL has decided to do with those 4 players that have left their teams; take a look.
Subject to change, but my understanding of the current situation for the 4 #NHL players who have taken leave of absence:
- Will continue to be paid.
- Continue to count against the salary cap.
- Do not count against the roster limit (e.g. non-roster status).
As Seravalli points out, all of this is subject to change if new information becomes available, but for now, all four players that are in the NHL will continue to be paid, will count against the cap and do not count against the NHL's roster limit meaning those teams can fill their spots without needing an exception.
I don't know if it's a good idea to continuing paying these players considering the overwhelming circumstances against them, but I get the NHL needs to take the cautious approach and needs more information before making a determination.
