Every so often, a league tries to introduce a new set of rules before they begin their season. Either in an effort to make the game more entertaining or to mitigate sore spots for fans. The Champions Hockey League is no stranger to this and they've introduced new rules that the National Hockey League should seriously think about adopting in the near future.
According to Gord Miller of TSN, the CHL are introducing 3 new very interesting rules in what seems to be an effort to drive offence and make the games more exciting; take a look.
The new rules:
A team will remain shorthanded even if the opposing team score a goal.
A minor penalty will be served even if a goal is scored while a delayed penalty is pending.
If a shorthanded team scores, the minor penalty against will end.
All of these rules are something that I've heard fans wanting for quite some time, but I never thought a professional hockey league, of any calibre would introduce them.
Although I'm sure some hockey purists will want the game to remain untouched, a player having to serve a full two minutes would certainly curb the amount of penalties in a game, a minor still having to be served if and when the opposing team scored on a delayed penalty is definitely a rule fans have called for.
If you ask me, these are rules that should be introduced at the NHL level to make the game more interesting.
The only one I'm not sure I agree with is if the short handed team scores, the penalty ends, although, like I said, it would force the team killing the penalty to drive the offence as well.
Knowing Gary Bettman though, these rules coming to the NHL anytime soon would be a fever dream.
