Don Cherry Drops a Bold Take For the Boston Bruins' Struggles and Playoff Chances this Season
With less than a week to go before the trade deadline, Don Cherry provided a surprising explanation for the Boston Bruins' struggles, as the team keeps losing.
Yesterday, the Boston Bruins lost again and are now at risk of falling to the Atlantic Division's seventh place. The team couldn't score a goal last night against the Minnesota Wild, highlighting the lack of offensive depth in the lineup, notably caused by injuries.
With Brad Marchand and Charlie McAvoy both sidelined with injuries, the team hasn't been able to bring enough energy to defeat the Wild and lost 1-0.
Joe Sacco, the Bruins' interim head coach, opened up about the Bruins' recent struggles, also sharing words about the 2-1 loss to the New York Islanders last Thursday:
"That's two out of the last three where we have to find a way to put the puck in. Whether it's creating more traffic at the net, having more of a shot mindset, playing off the shot more, creating some more two-for-ones-just getting to the interior.
I thought two games ago against the Islanders, even though we didn't grab one, we had better looks. I thought Minnesota did a good job trying to keep us to the outside. We have to find a way to get into the interior more."
However, according to Don Cherry, offensive issues are not the only thing holding back the Bruins.
In the latest episode of his podcast, Cherry revealed that he thinks the Bruins made too many trades and have lost their grit.
In his own words:
"Something happened to the Bruins. Somebody said something or did something, or did something-something's wrong with the Bruins."
"I think the Boston Bruins made too many trades and got rid of their grit. That's the story."
"I don't know if they'll make the playoffs, but tough-pretty tough to jump over."
The Big Bad Bruins aren't as big and bad as they used to be.
In fact, since 2023, they parted ways with a few tough players, like Tyler Bertuzzi, Nick Foligno, and Pat Maroon, and haven't replaced them.
Add to that the fact that Brad Marchand isn't the player he used to be, and it's pretty easy to see what is wrong with the Bruins.
Their identity and culture were always key to their success. Sadly, since Patrice Bergeron retired after their record-breaking season, they haven't been able to maintain that level.
This summer will be crucial for GM Don Sweeney as he looks to bring his team back on track.
