Moments ago, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman broke the news that the Calgary Flames have fired head coach Darryl Sutter.
The move comes just two weeks after the Flames announced they mutually parted ways with their longtime general manager, Brad Treliving.
The decision to fire Sutter will be a costly one to the Flames organization. Just last season, the Flames extended Sutter until the end of the 2024-25. Now, they'll be buying the contract out for the full $8M still owed to Sutter.
It was a disaster season for the Calgary Flames. Their year began with their superstars Matthew Tkachuck and Johnny Gaudreau electing to leave, and their replacements in Nazem Kadri and Jonathan Huberdeau having massively disappointing seasons. The team was eliminated from playoff contention in the final week of the season after beginning the year with hopes of again competing for the western conference.
