The Caroline Hurricanes announced that they have signed Swedish-American Joakim Ryan to a one-year deal with an AAV of $775,000.

Ryan, 31 was drafted in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft by the San Jose Sharks in the 7th round 198th overall.

In 145 games previously played in the NHL with the San Jose Sharks, Los Angeles Kings and Carolina Hurricanes he amassed 4 goals along with 20 assists and 33 penalty minutes. Aside from playing in North America, he spent the last three seasons in the SHL where he played in 156 games for the Malmo Redhawks. During his time as a Redhawk, he had 16 goals, 47 assists along with 46 penalty minutes.

Ryan will be looked upon to provide veteran leadership and experience and is a good depth move for the franchise. During Ryan's career, he participated in 23 playoff games for the San Jose Sharks throughout the 2017-2018 season as well as the 2018-2019 season. The depth move by Hurricanes GM Eric Tulsky only looks to solidify a team that although missed out on the opportunity at a long playoff run last season looks to rebound and stretch themselves further than the previous campaign.
