RFA Martin Necas has signed a contract extension with the Carolina Hurricanes keeping him around for at least the next couple of seasons.
Necas and the Hurricanes were heading for a messy divorce but it appears they will be together, at least for the next couple of seasons as he inked a two-year deal worth 6.5 million a season. In 362 NHL games, all with the Carolina Hurricanes he has contributed 97 goals along with 146 assists.
Keeping Necas around for the foreseeable future is a great move by the Hurricanes who although have not been as successful as they had hoped are likely Eastern Conference contenders and possible Stanley Cup contenders going into the 2024-2025 season. While many may argue that $6.5 million could be an overpay for the centre, the name of the game in the National Hockey League is as much of what will you do for me later as much as it is what have you done for me lately.
There had been speculation that Necas was trying to force his way out of Carolina last season as reports indicated he was unhappy with his role within the team but it appears he has come to terms with how he will be utilized and is ready to play.
