Evgeny Kuznetsov's time with the Carolina Hurricanes and in the National Hockey League appear to be coming to an end on Wednesday.

According to Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff, the Carolina Hurricanes will be placing Evgeny Kuznetsov on unconditional waivers this afternoon to terminate the final year of his contract.

The move to terminate Evgeny Kuznetsov's contract will significantly help the Washington Capitals, who traded him to Carolina ahead of the deadline in March. The Capitals retained 50% of his remaining salary and will now gain $3.9 million in additional cap space through his contract termination this week.

"Hearing Evgeny Kuznetsov will be placed on unconditional waivers today for purposes of a mutual contract termination.

Both #Canes and #Caps are now free of Kuznetsov's cap hit and contract. He is walking away from final $6 million owed in salary this season to return to Russia." Seravalli said.

Kuznetsov being placed on unconditional waivers for contract termination follows a report that came out earlier this week out of Russia saying that he'll be signing a four-year contract with KHL club SKA St. Petersburg.

"Per championat.com Evgeni Kuznetsov is set to sign a 4-year contract with SKA as soon as he terminates his agreement with the Hurricanes #CauseChaos #Canes."

Kuznetsov, 32, spent 11 seasons in the National Hockey League with Washington and Carolina, registering 575 points (173 goals, 402 assists) and 394 penalty minutes in 743 games. He went on to add 73 points in 97 playoff games, winning the Stanley Cup with the Capitals in 2018.

More to come.
