Martin Necas reportedly unlikely to be dealt by Carolina this summer
Martin Necas is reportedly unlikely to be dealt by the Carolina Hurricanes this summer and will remain with the team to start the 2024-25 season.
After rumours swirling over the last month regarding his future with the Hurricanes, it appears that Czech forward Martin Necas will remain in Carolina, at least to start the year.
In a recent interview with NHL.com, Carolina Hurricanes General Manager Eric Tulsky shared that the team is comfortable with what they have right now and are focused on signing their two remaining restricted free agents - Martin Necas and Seth Jarvis. Tulsky added that the most likely outcome right now is that they begin the season with their current group, meaning Necas will stay in Carolina, unless something that surprises them comes up.
"I think we're comfortable with what we have," Tulsky said. "Right now, our focus is on getting our last couple of RFAs signed. We are continuing to talk to teams about trade possibilities and looking at what's left out there. There is time left in the summer, so we are still looking under every rock trying to make the team better.
"But I think the most likely outcome right now is that we have our group unless something surprising comes up."
Tulsky went on to discuss the difficulty of making a big trade after July 1st, when teams hand out a lot of money to free agents. Once teams get their business in the free agent market done, for the most part their cap situations don't allow for the addition of a player like Necas, who is set for a big bump in pay through arbitration next month. A deal with Carolina could still come beforehand if both sides can work out a deal.
The Hurricanes GM says that they're still talking to teams because he wants to be open to making a move to make his team better, but because teams have less flexibility, it's harder to search for a trade partner.
"It is a lot easier to make trades before July 1 when teams have flexibility to go pivot and sign other players to replace whatever they gave up than it is after July 1 when their roster is mostly built," Tulsky said, per NHL.com. "We are continuing to talk to teams, and we don't want to miss an opportunity to make the team better, but teams have less flexibility now than they had in June, so it's harder to find a deal now than it was then."
While Martin Necas will likely remain with the Hurricanes to start the 2024-25 campaign, don't be surprised to hear his name circulate in rumours throughout the season and towards the trade deadline.
