The Colorado Avalanche are reportedly closing in on a long-term extension for Finnish forward Mikko Rantanen.

According to Jesse Montano of Guerilla Sports, the Colorado Avalanche and star forward Mikko Rantanen are close to agreeing to terms on a long-term contract extension in the seven or eight-year range.

"Had some construction going in the studio today, so it was a rare work from home day. Took the day to make a couple calls and fire off some texts..

Sounds like the Rantanen extension is close, should be done soon. Expecting it to be long-term (7 or 8 years potentially). #GoAvsGo" Montano said.

Rantanen, 27, was eligible to sign a contract extension with the Avalanche as of 12 p.m. ET on July 1st and has one year remaining on his current deal with a cap hit of $9.25 million. Given the growth in his game over the last few seasons, it wouldn't be shocking to see Rantanen receive over $11 million per year on his next contract.

The Nousiainen, Finland native recorded his second consecutive season with 100 or more points in 2023-24. In 80 games, Rantanen had 104 points (42 goals, 62 assists), 50 penalty minutes and was a plus-19. He went on to add 14 points in ten games during the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

We'll have to wait and see how this story develops in the coming days, but it looks like the Colorado Avalanche are set to lock up a key piece of their core and will now turn their attention to winning their second Stanley Cup of the MacKinnon, Rantanen and Makar era.
