The 24-year-old blueliner has been with the Avalanche for most of the season, but he has primarily served in a number 7 role.
In fact, it has been quite some time since the last time he got into a game.
That was all the way back on December 5th last year when he played just under 13 minutes in a 5-3 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes.
After more than a month of no game action, the Avalanche finally elected to put him on waivers for the purpose of sending him to the AHL.
Perhaps the Avalanche have been waiting for a chance to sneak him through waivers as they are afraid of losing him for free.
That could be why they elected to make the move today after it came out that the Penguins placed goalie Tristan Jarry on waivers as well.
After all, Jarry is more or less a household name in the NHL while Ludvig certainly is not.
As such, he could serve as a distraction for the Avalanche, enabling them to sneak Ludvig onto the Eagles.
Ludvig got into just 8 games with the Avs, most of which came last November.
He does not seem to be a player that head coach Jared Bednar is keen to rely on as he has averaged less than 13 minutes a night in those 8 contests.
For a defenseman, that is a very little amount of ice time. At that point, many coaches would be tempted to run with 13 forwards instead.
Perhaps there is another team around the league that would like to give him more of a chance.
Now would be their time to do so as anyone can claim him for free as long as they keep him on the NHL roster.
That being said, if the Penguins claim him they can send him directly to the AHL since he began the year on their roster.
As such, look for the Penguins to potentially make a claim for him. Otherwise, he will likely remain in the NHL or with the Avalanche organization.
