Philadelphia Flyers likely receivers NHL approval before termination of Ryan Johansen contract
The Philadelphia Flyers reportedly received a 'wink' from the NHL according to Elliotte Friedman before terminating Ryan Johansen's contract.
Earlier this week the Philadelphia Flyers placed forward, Ryan Johansen on unconditional waivers for the purposes of terminating his contract. The issue stems from Johansen failing to report to Philadelphia after he was traded due to what he deemed a serious injury. It has since come to light that Johansen's agent Kurt Overhardt of KO Sports Inc. will be filing a grievance in the days.
According to Elliotte Friedman, the Flyers likely wouldn't have even considered terminating the deal unless they had some backing from the league. For Johansen's efforts, he may have breached his contract as there are reports that he re-aggravated an existing ankle injury while hoverboarding on the Ocean City Boardwalk. If that's not bad enough, videos have surfaced of him at his wedding lifting his bride over his head.
The burden however will fall on NHL and the Flyers to prove that he breached his contract. Friedman states the most likely of outcomes still remains a settlement as the NHL and NHLPA don't typically likely to have a concrete precedent set.
However, depending on the seriousness of Johansen's injury it is plausible that he can still do some things, even if at just a minimum playing hockey just may not be on that list. It must be understood that he was probably doing his best to enjoy the festivities at his wedding as for the hoverboarding, can't the guy just enjoy his life?
All this to say that the timing of everything is just unfortunate. From the idea that Johansen and Tortorella don't get along to him supposedly breaching his contract for something nobody knows for certain.
