Valeri Nichushkin suspended for minimum of six months
For the second year in a row, the Colorado Avalanche will be forced to go without Valeri Nichushkin in a pivotal playoff series. Today it was announced that Nichushkin will be suspended for a minimum of 6 months without pay. This comes after violation of NHL policy.
The announcement was made on Monday night by the NHL.
The National Hockey League and National Hockey League Players' Association announced today that forward Valeri Nichushkin of the Colorado Avalanche has been placed in Stage 3 of the Player Assistance Program of the NHLPA and NHL.
Under the terms of the joint program, Nichushkin will be suspended without pay for a minimum of six months and then will be eligible to apply for reinstatement.
Unlike most suspensions Nichushkin Will not be automatically reinstated. Instead, he will have to apply to the NHL to be approved to return. This comes after last season, when the forward was involved in a situation at a team hotel. After the incident he left during the middle of the night and was not with a team for the remainder of the series.
This is a serious blow to the Avalanche. In 8 games this playoffs Nichushkin has 9 goals and 1 assist. Hopefully the forward gets any help he desires at this time.
