Red Wings Head Coach Derek Lalonde issues update on Dylan Larkin
During Saturday's game against the Ottawa Senators, Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin was left motionless on the ice after taking a cross-check to the back of the head/neck area from Mathieu Joseph, along with getting hit in the side of the face by Parker Kelly at the same time.
The incident led to a huge scrum on the ice, with Ottawa's Artyom Zub being cross-checked in the face by Detroit's David Perron, who is set to have a hearing with the NHL's Department of Player Safety.
Larkin eventually got up with the help of his teammates and left for the Red Wings' dressing room and did not return. There was a lot of concern from many in the hockey world, especially given his history with previous neck injury after a cross-check by Jamie Benn.
On Monday, Detroit Red Wings Head Coach Derek Lalonde shared an update with reporters, saying that Dylan Larkin has been placed on injured reserve retroactive to December 9th, but added that there isn't a timeline for his return yet.
Larkin, 27, has played a huge role in the Detroit Red Wings' success so far in the 2023-24 season, putting up 25 points (11 goals, 14 assists), 31 penalty minutes and is a plus-five.
The loss of Larkin in the Red Wings' lineup for an indefinite period is certainly going to hurt, but with the recent addition of Patrick Kane, along with the performances of players such as Alex DeBrincat, Lucas Raymond and goaltender Ville Husso, Detroit should be able to hold down the fort and remain in the mix for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
