Nothing seems to be working in New York for the Rangers anymore. Following a Presidents' Trophy season in 2023-24, the Blueshirts are currently fifth in the Metropolitan Division with a 15-14-1 record, only two points away from the Columbus Blue Jackets at the eighth rank.
After trading away their captain Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks, it was widely believed that if the Rangers couldn't turn things around on the ice, many more changes would come in the organization.
One of the other main changes the team could make is fire their head coach Peter Laviolette.
There have been multiple rumors that the Rangers could be looking to part ways with Laviolette, but nothing has happened as of now.
Larry Brooks of the New York Post revealed the simple reason behind the Rangers' decision to keep Laviolette around.
In a recent paper, he wrote that the Rangers are reluctant to blame Laviolette for the team's struggles due to the team's pattern of firing head coaches for the players' underwhelming performances.
After firing David Quinn four years ago and Gerard Gallart two years ago, the team doesn't want to make another coaching change if the real problem lies in the roster.
In Brooks' own words:
The Rangers will be back on the ice tonight to face the Nashville Predators, the last team in the Central Division standings. They have a great opportunity to get back on the right track after two consecutive tough losses to the Los Angeles Kings and the St. Louis Blues.
