Mike Modano joined the Detroit Red Wings in 2010 after an amazing run with the North Stars/Stars, and now he's told the story of how Mike Babcock denied him career game number 1,500.

After a stellar 21-year career that included a Stanley Cup with the Dallas Stars and Minnesota North Stars, Mike Modano left the team for the final year of his career, joining the Detroit Red Wings, not long removed from their last Stanley Cup run.

In that season, Modano had just 4 goals and 15 points in 40 games played, with the last of those games being career game No. 1,499, with many wondering why he was never afforded the opportunity to make it a milestone 1,500.

The story is well known, and unsurprisingly it involves Mike Babcock, and now, Modano has told all himself on the latest episode of the Spittin' Chiclets podcast, revealing how the veteran Head Coach stopped him from getting the milestone.

For some reason, in the second last game of the season, Babcock forced Modano out of the lineup, and when asked about it, this is reportedly what the Head Coach told him.

«Mike, we didn't bring you here to get 1,500 games, we brought you here to win a cup.»

The Red Wings would not go on a deep Stanley Cup run that season, and it would end the legendary run of one of the greatest players of a generation, as he would end up posting 561 goals and 1,374 points over his time in the NHL.

Ultimately though, this was an incredibly strange and unexplainable move from Babcock, who has since been cut from the league, likely for the last time as a Head Coach, and given the way he disrespected a legend of the game, it was just incredibly unnecessary.
