Red Wings Head Coach Derek Lalonde Provides A Concerning Update Regarding Patrick Kane
The news just keeps getting worse for the Red Wings, as after an abysmal start to the season, head coach Derek Lalonde provided another bad update on Patrick Kane.
Detroit Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde has hinted that the team will be without one of its top forwards tonight.
On Monday, Lalonde told reporters that Kane won't play against the New York Islanders due to an injury. There were whispers he wasn't at 100% leading up to this announcement.
It had been wondered a day earlier when he didn't take part in practice, tagged as a maintenance day, and now it's known he's hurt while adding possibly a bit worse than initially believed according to Lalonde.
Lalonde said Kane would need "another day" to get over the issue but wouldn't go so far as to promise his return, categorizing his status as "day to day."
«Need another day, probably day-to-day situation.»
- Derek Lalonde, Detroit Red Wings head coach
If that's a hint, the ambiguity in that estimation suggests the injury isn't considered one that will keep him out for an extended period.
Kane is on a one-year deal carrying a $4M cap hit and has been unable to come close to last season's totals, despite showing flashes of brilliance here and there. This has fueled trade speculation as well for Kane.
He had 20 goals and 27 assists for 47 points in 50 games in 2022-23, almost a point-per-game clip. This year, he has just three goals and seven assists for 10 points through his first 20 games.
