After no one was placed on waivers on Thursday, the wire was active once again on Friday afternoon thanks to the Edmonton Oilers.

According to TSN's Chris Johnston, the Edmonton Oilers have placed defenceman Markus Niemelainen on waivers for the purpose of assigning him to their American Hockey League affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors.

"Placed on NHL waivers today: Markus Niemelainen (EDM)." Johnston said.

Niemelainen, 25, appeared in 23 games for the Edmonton Oilers last season, where he didn't record any points. He also played in 30 games for the AHL's Bakersfield Condors where he put up seven points (two goals, five assists), 18 penalty minutes and was a plus-four.

Teams around the league will have until 2 p.m. ET on Saturday to place a claim on Markus Niemelainen, with the Anaheim Ducks having first dibs after finishing 32nd overall in the 2022-23 standings.
