Edmonton Oilers General Manager Stan Bowman has been working closing with Oilers' superstar Leon Draisaitl on a new contract. The latest update provides a deadline for the contract to get finalized because Draisaitl doesn't want to negotiate during the season.
The latest financials on the new contract is an 8 year deal with a $13.5M AAV. Draisaitl and Oilers GM Stan Bowman are expected to meet this week in Edmonton to try and hammer out the deal. The deal has to be final by September 19th because Leon won't negotiate during the season.
It was reported that 10 days after the season Draisaitl, Connor McDavid & Evan Bouchard met with members of the team who were on expiring contracts to talk about taking a little less on their next deals to help build a winning team that can compete for the Stanley Cup for many years.
Draisaitl is currently making $8.5M. In the first seven years of Draisaitl's current eight-year contract, he's recorded 100 or more points five times and has reached the 50+ goal mark on three occasions.
With Draisaitl consistently playing like a top 5 player in the world, he will soon be paid like one.
