Last week, the Rutger McGroarty saga finally came to an end for the Winnipeg Jets. After being drafted 14th overall by the team, the top prospect refused to sign and eventually requested a trade. McGroarty was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Brayden Yager, finally allowing the Jets to move on.
According to Winnipeg Jets general manager, Kevin Cheveldayoff, the only reasoning he was ever given was that, "it didn't feel right." In a post trade press conference, the GM shared that when he requested more information he was met with resistance. Instead simply being told that when McGroarty put on the jersey, he didn't feel like he was meant to be a Jet. This must have come as a surprise to the Jets, especially after the comments made by McGroarty after being drafted.
In an interview given by McGroarty, the forward shared just now much he loved the Jets. Rutger even went as far as to share the Jets were his favorite team growing up, despite the fact that McGroarty was 7 when the Jets returned to the NHL. While unlikely, it is possible that a kid from Lincoln, Nebraska would love the Jets.
But, if you dig just a little bit deeper, this isn't the first time McGroarty claimed a team was his favorite. After being interviewed by the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Draft Combine, McGroarty made similar comments.
Now in Pittsburgh, McGroarty has signed his first NHL contract and it's likely only a matter of time before he shares how the Penguins were always his favorite team. Or, maybe it won't feel right in Pittsburgh either and the forward will once again look to move on. Either way, McGroarty has a lot to prove if he wants to shake his current reputation.
