Training camps around the National Hockey League will be getting underway in nearly three weeks and there are still several prominent names that remain unsigned as restricted free agents, including Boston Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman.
The Bruins are optimistic that they'll get a deal done with Swayman soon, but a recent report has shed some light on how much the netminder is seeking per season on his new contract.
According to Rich Keefe of Jones and Keefe on WEEI radio in Boston, Jeremy Swayman is reportedly looking for $10 million per season on his new contract with the Bruins.
Swayman has been arguably been one of the best goaltenders in the National Hockey League over the last few seasons, but $10 million per year is a lot of commit to a netminder, especially if it's over a long-term deal in the seven or eight-year range. If Swayman is able to get $10 million from the Boston Bruins, it'll tie him with Sergei Bobrovsky for the second-highest AAV among goaltenders, only $500,000 behind Carey Price, who's in first on the list.
Last season, the 25-year-old went back-and-forth with Linus Ullmark for starts during the regular season, but ended up taking over the starting role during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Bruins are ready to commit to Swayman as their starter as well, after trading Linus Ullmark to the Ottawa Senators.
In 44 games last season, Swayman had a record of 25-10-8 along with a 2.53 goals against average, a .916 save percentage and three shutouts.
It'll be interesting to see what Jeremy Swayman's contract ends up looking like. He should definitely be in the top-ten for AAV among goalies in the NHL, but $10 million might be too much for the Boston Bruins right now.
