Montreal Canadiens Goaltender Cayden Primeau Learns His Future After Being Waived
The Montreal Canadiens waived goaltender Cayden Primeau, and now it's been revealed that he'll remain with the organization and the Laval Rocket of the AHL.
The Montreal Canadiens have been struggling in net for much of the 2024/25 season, with the team ranking in the bottom-three in the NHL in goals allowed per game with a 3.49 mark.
Now however, things may be changing, as the team debuted Jakub Dobes over the weekend, and in his first ever NHL appearance, he'd dominate the Florida Panthers with 34 saves en route to the 4-0 shutout win.
To bring him up however, that meant waiving former top prospect Cayden Primeau, and on Sunday, we officially learned that he has cleared waivers, and will head to the Laval Rocket of the AHL to work on his game.
The 25-year old posted a 4.70 GAA and an .836 through 11 appearances this season, and given that Montreal want a good look at their future, it makes sense that they were willing to lose him to give a 23-year old his first shot at the NHL level.
While this isn't good for the career of Primeau right now, who is a free agent at the end of this season, past success shows that he clearly has the talent to be an NHL goaltender, but without the consistency behind it, there's a long road back for him to be a player at that level.
For now, he will head back to Laval and try and work out the kinks in his game, and if he can do that there's no doubting that he'll be a solid player at whatever level he finds himself at.
As for the future in Montreal, a Montembault/Dobes pairing appears to be the way they will go in the near future, and with another several talented prospects in the system, this may be the end for Primeau in a Habs jersey.
