The New Jersey Devils have been arguably the best team in the NHL over the first few months of the season, and on Saturday night they have the chance to prove it against the Carolina Hurricanes for the second game in a row.
Unfortunately, for the second time this season, star forward Timo Meier now faces suspension again, this time for a hit on Hurricanes star Martin Necas.
In in a play that could have been avoided easily, Meier hit Necas right in the knee in a knee-on-knee collision, and given that it appeared obvious, he was quickly ejected from the game.
However, some Devils fans on social media have called out the officiating for the decision, given the fact that despite it looking absolutely brutal, Necas didn't miss a single shift in the game.
Ultimately, the Hurricanes would go on to pick up the dominant 5-2 victory, avenging themselves for a Friday night loss to the Devils, with this rivalry at the top of the Metropolitan Division continuing to heat up.
While Meier made plenty of contact to the body of Necas, it's clear that he targeted the knee with the way he buckled back, and thankfully for the Hurricanes, they won't be missing one of the league's leading scorers for any significant stretch of time.
Ultimately, this isn't the first time that Meier has been involved in a play like this after cross-checking Zachary L'Hereux to the face earlier in the season, and now, we will wait and see whether or not this warrants any further discipline from the NHL's Department of Player Safety.
