Jack Hughes attempted a bold move against the New York Rangers, and after being called out by an analyst, former NHLer PK Subban has stood up for the young star.
In this new era of hockey, skill is often prioritized over the style of play that made NHLers successful in the past, and while it's great for young fans and aspiring players, there are those in the older generation that simply can't handle it.
In their recent matchup with the New York Rangers, Jack Hughes put that on full display, as he attempted the move known as 'The Forsberg' against Igor Shesterkin, which unfortunately failed, although the Devils would go on to be victorious 5-1.
After the game, Rangers analyst Steve Valiquette called out Hughes for the attempt,, calling it 'Instagram hockey' and called it disrespectful to Shesterkin in net.
It's likely that Hughes has heard this criticism before and won't respond or likely even listen to the comments made, but former NHLer PK Subban certainly did, and in defense of Hughes he called out Valiquette.
"... With all due respect to the 46 games that Steve played in the league, Jack Hughes is a premier player in the National Hockey League who has the ability to do things that less than 1% of athletes can do on this planet....," Subban said.
"We need to give him leash to do that," Subban said about Hughes. "As the media, we need to uplift it. That's my job. And that's your job, Steve.I get the homorism. Let's put that aside. What Steve's really doing, though, is addressing the New York Rangers and that guys should be fired up about the situation..."
It appears as though Subban is on the right side of the media that should be uplifting young players to be bold and attempt things rather than tearing them down, and while Hughes shouldn't be attempting that all the time, there's definitely a time and a place.
Ultimately, this is the type of criticism that we've seen for Hughes and the likes of Trevor Zegras for some time now, and while there will always be those that hate it, their success should speak for itself.
