A former second-round NHL draft pick has been sentenced to six months in prison after being found guilty of harassing and threatening an ex-girlfriend for three years.

26-year-old Gabriel Gagne, taken 36th overall by the Ottawa Senators in 2015, pleaded guilty in May to charges of harassment and death threats. His prison sentence was handed down recently. He was acquitted of sexual assault and one charge of assault was stayed.

According to court documents obtained by TVA Sports, Gagne called and texted his ex-girlfriend incessantly in the summer of 2017. Some of the messages said he loved her, others said he hated her. One stated in Quebec slang French "Ma ten caliser [sic] une", which roughly translates to "I'm going to kick the s--t out of you." Court documents show Gagne went through the process of creating multiple fake social media accounts to keep up with his ex blocking him.

This is not Gagne's first run-in with the law. He is accused of sexual assault in both Montmagny and Trois-Rivières, Quebec. One of the alleged victims was a minor at the time. After those allegations came to light, another minor in Saint-Jérôme came forward with more allegations. Two weeks later, he was in a courtroom in Saint-Hyacinthe, where he was charged with sexual assault, assault with a weapon, harassment and assault of a young woman. Gagne is awaiting trial in all of three of these cases, so the six months he's received now may be the first of many to come.

Gagne did sign an entry-level contract with the Ottawa Senators, but never made it higher than the AHL. He last played professionally for the Rockford IceHogs of the AHL in 2020-21.
