Senators announce the passing of assistant coach Bob Jones
We have some sad news to pass along in the hockey world on Friday as the Ottawa Senators have announced the passing of a member of the coaching staff.
In a post on social media on Friday, the Senators announced that assistant coach Bob Jones has passed away at the age of 54 following a battle with ALS.
"The Ottawa Senators announced today that the organization is mourning the passing of former assistant coach Bob Jones after a courageous battle with ALS. He was 54." The team said.
Ottawa Senators owner Michael Andlauer expressed sadness following the news of Jones' passing, saying that he will be remembered by everyone in the organization and those he helped throughout his lengthy coaching career.
"The thoughts of the entire Senators organization are with Bob's loved ones and we extend our deepest condolences to his family," said Senators owner Michael Andlauer. "For our current players and staff who had the privilege of working with Bob, his loss is one of immense sadness. Bob will be fondly remembered for his genuine zest for life and his unwavering commitment to continually improving individual players and each hockey organization for which he worked."
Jones' coaching journey began back in the 1995-96 season as an assistant with the Soo Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League. He would go on to spend 23 seasons in coaching roles in the OHL with the Soo Greyhounds, Brampton Battalion, Toronto St. Michael's Majors, Sudbury Wolves, Windsor Spitfires and Oshawa Generals before making the jump to the professional ranks with the Texas Stars of the AHL 2018-19.
Ahead of the 2019-20 season, Jones returned to Canada and was named an assistant coach with the Ottawa Senators, a role he held until his passing.
The thoughts of everyone here at Blade of Steel are with Bob Jones' family and friends at this difficult time.
