Philadelphia Flyers aggressively looking to trade one of their defenders before free agency begins
The Philadelphia Flyers missed the playoffs again this season, which finally led to sweeping organizational changes. Unfortunately injuries played a very large role in another wasted season. One of those injuries was to Ryan Ellis, a player the Flyers had acquired and had to expected to be a big part of their defense.
When the Flyers acquired Ryan Ellis from the Nashville Predators, hope was high he would be able to turn their back end around, unfortunately, that's not what happened and the top 4 defender hasn't played a game in the National Hockey League since November of 2021
Now, according to The Fourth Period's Anthony Di Marco, the Flyers would like to move the defenders contract, take a look:
Per Anthony Di Marco, the #Flyers are "actively looking at ways" to move the contract of defenseman Ryan Ellis.
Ellis, 32, has not played an NHL game since November 2021 and the general belief is that his career is over.
Philadelphia will not pay assets to dump him, but they are "more than open" to taking back a short-term player who makes too much money for a team's comfort.
Di Marco mentions the Evgenii Dadonov/Shea Weber swap as an idea of what the Flyers are looking to do. Ellis, 32, only played in 4 games after coming over to the Flyers, in those games, he had 1 goal and 4 assists. In his career, Ellis had played 566 games recording 76 goals and 199 assists for 275 total points.
With Ellis's career more than likely over, the Flyers will have a hard time finding someone to take on his contract. Arizona obviously comes to mind, however, I'm not sure they fit the requirements Philadelphia would like coming back in return. Especially if the Flyers aren't willing to spend the assets needed to move his deal.
