Flyers sign former first-round pick to massive 8-year contract extension
The Philadelphia Flyers have signed a former first-round pick to a massive 8-year contract extension.
In a post on social media on Thursday afternoon, the Philadelphia Flyers announced that they've agreed to terms on an eight-year contract extension worth $70 million ($8.75 million AAV) with forward Travis Konecny.
The 27-year-old became eligible to sign a contract extension with the Flyers back on July 1st and his new deal will kick in ahead of the 2025-26 campaign. Konecny is a massive piece of the Flyers organization and someone they expect to be a key player for them over the next nine years.
Flyers General Manager Danny Briere commented on the signing on Thursday saying that the organization is thrilled to have Konecny under contract for the long-term and that his work-ethic, tenacity and talent make him a key piece to the future in Philadelphia.
"Travis Konecny is an integral part of the fabric of our team and we are thrilled to have him under contract for the long-term," said Brière. "Travis has grown into a significant leader on our team and he truly embodies what it means to be a Flyer. His work-ethic, combined with his tenacity and talent makes him a central figure for what we are building towards, and his determination for our future success speaks volumes about his commitment to our team and city."
Konecny said that he's happy to sign a long-term extension with the Philadelphia Flyers and that the future is bright and exciting with the team. He added that he can't wait to get back to Philadelphia and back in front of the fans for the 2024-25 campaign.
"I couldn't be happier to sign again with the Flyers," said Konecny. "There's such a bright and exciting future with this team and I can't wait to be a part of it for the next nine years and see what we will accomplish. I can't thank all my teammates and staff members enough because this opportunity wouldn't be possible without each and every one of them along the way. I can't wait to get back to Philly in front of the best fans in the world and I look forward to another great season!"
Last season, Konecny appeared in 76 games for the Flyers where he set new career highs in goals and points. The London, Ontario native recorded 68 points (33 goals, 35 assists), 67 penalty minutes and was a plus-four.
