Wayne Simmonds signs one final NHL contract
It was announced a few weeks ago that rugged power forward Wayne Simmonds would be signing a one-day contract to retire in a Philadelphia Flyers jersey. It is a fitting ending to a great career for the Scarborough, Ontario native. Simmonds time with the Flyers was the most successful period of his career. For a span of seven years from 2012-2019, Simmonds was a beloved Flyer who twice put up 60 point, 100 + penalty minute seasons.
The Flyers will honor Simmonds before their game on Saturday April 13th against the New Jersey Devils (another former team of Simmonds) at Wells Fargo Center.
"It's hard to describe my emotions on a day like this, but one of my very first thoughts as I look back is my life in Philadelphia and playing for the Flyers," Simmonds said in a statement. "Taking the ice in a Flyers sweater is a special feeling and it's one that I'm truly proud of. The history of this franchise and standard of being a Flyer that was set is unique and one that I hold in the highest regard. Perhaps the biggest reason for that is the way the fans embrace this team."
The latter part of Simmonds career was derailed by a litany of injuries that occurred from his rough, and rugged style of play. Simmonds last game came on April 8th 2023 as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs against the Montreal Canadiens
The 35 year old, finishes his career playing 1,037 NHL games, scoring 263 goals and 526 points. Over his 15 year career he played with Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Nashville, New Jersey, Buffalo and Toronto.
