With Sidney Crosby still a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins, at least for one more season, the team's competitive window will remain open, but that hasn't stopped them from reportedly discussing a trade involving one of their best defencemen in franchise history - Kris Letang.
Recently, Mark Madden of The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported that the Pittsburgh Penguins held discussions with the Montreal Canadiens regarding a potential trade, but nothing came of it in the end.
Madden went on to add that Kris Letang has expressed interest in joining his hometown team, the Montreal Canadiens, which likely led to the talks this summer, but the 37-year-old will remain a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins for the start of the 2024-25 campaign.
Last season, Letang was solid for the Penguins, doing all he could to help push the team towards a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. However, their efforts fell short in the final week of the regular season and the Penguins missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the second year in a row, a first for them in the Sidney Crosby era.
In 82 games, Letang registered 51 points (ten goals, 41 assists), 62 penalty minutes and was a plus-13. It marked the eighth time in his National Hockey League career that he had 50 or more points in a single season.
Trading for Kris Letang wouldn't make a whole lot of sense at this time for the Montreal Canadiens given the logjam they currently have on their blueline and with rookies David Reinbacher, Lane Hutson and Logan Mailloux going to be pushing for full-time roles in training camp.
