Mike Grier, General Manager of the San Jose Sharks has gone on record to address rumours that he is shopping the team's captain, Logan Couture
To put it mildly, the San Jose Sharks have a ton of work to do in order to get back to competing for a Stanley Cup Playoff spot in the Western Conference. So much so, that it will likely take years before that happens. While acknowledging all the work that needs to be done, the team's General Manager, Mike Grier, has addressed rumours of a potential trade involving the team's captain.
Rumours have surrounded Logan Couture for a while now. He missed the first 45 games of the 2023-24 season with a hip injury. He came back in January, but went back on the injured list after just six games after reaggravating the injury. Despite that, Grier made it clear the 35-year-old isn't going anywhere.
"And just one more thing I want to put to bed for you media guys. Stuff is out there that I'm looking to trade Logan Couture or anything like that. That is absolutely false. If you look at us bringing in young players and having a young team, he is exactly the type of person you want to have around your young players. He's our captain, he's our leader. He had a tough year, but we love him as a person most importantly, and he's still a heck of a hockey player."
For his part, Couture told NHL.com that he loves San Jose and has no desire to leave.
"Obviously a terrible, terrible season, but I think this is rock bottom. I think they're growing this organization in the proper way even though you may not see it right now with how tough the season was.
"It's tough. Losing [stinks]. ... I was fortunate to be here through many, many great years. ... I hope that we can get back there. I hope I'm around this team when we get back to that point."
The San Jose Sharks finished dead last in the league in 2023-24 with just 47 points, and a record of 19-54-9.
