Tampa Bay Lightning for sale for historic price
The Tampa Bay Lightning are reportedly for sale for a record breaking 2 billion dollars.
The Tampa Bay Lightning have been one of the most successful teams of the last decade. The team has multiple Stanley Cup championships to show for their overall success. That success has led to the team reaching a record value and now the current ownership group is looking for an opportunity to offload the team.
This isn't the first case that we've seen recently of ownership looking to exploit a high market. Multiple other NHL teams have sold off shares in the recent months as they look to expand their ownership groups. Today. Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet broke the following story.
According to multiple sources, the Tampa Bay Lightning have begun a multi-stage sale process that will value the team at close to $2 billion (US).
Those sources stressed the deal is not done yet, adding there will be no immediate change of ownership control and no change in the day-to-day operations of the team.
This deal would help solidify the ownership group in Tampa Bay and further solidify the teams spot in the upper echelon of the league. The Lightning's current owner has the following to say:
I can confirm that we are in discussions to further expand our ownership group of the Tampa Bay Lightning. There will be no change in the day-to-day operations of the Lightning and Vinik Sports Group. I am very excited about what is to come for the organization and we look forward to sharing more when the time is right.
Earlier this year Sportico valued the Lightning at approximately 1.2 billion dollars, so a 2 billion dollar valuation shows the continued climb of NHL franchises values. Despite all the shots at Gary Bettman, one thing is for sure, he has seen values of teams shoot threw the roof.
