Montreal Canadiens defender furious after being disrespected by the Toronto Maple Leafs
The Toronto Maple Leafs easily handled the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night. The Maple Leafs costed to a 7-1 victory in front of a home time crowd. The Atlantic Division matchup would usually have little recourse, but after tonight's game Montreal defender Chris Wideman was unhappy and shared it with reporters.
They'll get what they deserve in a few weeks.
So what was it that has Wideman so upset? After Matt Murray was unable to be cleared by the team's medical staff the Maple Leafs signed emergency backup goalie Jett Alexander to an amateur tryout for tonight's game. Something multiple team's have done this season.
With the Leafs up 7-1 and with only 70 seconds left on the clock the play was blown dead. Similar to a gesture the Edmonton Oilers completed earlier this year, the Leafs made a goaltending switch. Out comes Ilya Samsonov and in goes Alexander.
This gesture was intended as a simple thank you for Alexander and as a way to make the University player's dreams come true of playing in an NHL game. Clearly that's not how it was taken by the Canadiens.
So the question remains, was this a disrespectful move by the Leafs or is Chris Wideman just a little bit sensitive after a long season?
