Sheldon Keefe's latest comments appear to have him begging his GM for help
Sheldon Keefe and the Toronto Maple Leafs believe they are contenders in the NHL playoff race.
However, due to issues in the net, mainly with starting goalie Joseph Woll, who has been out with a high-ankle sprain since December 7th.
Since then, Illya Samsonov and Martin Jones have had to split goal-tending duties, with Jones shouldering a majority of starts, as Samsonov has had an issue of confidence in the net again this year.
If the Maple Leafs are to become playoff contenders once again, they will need to bolster their goal-tending core in some way. Sheldon Keefe is desperate for goaltending help,as the team is merely 2 points ahead of the Tampa Bay Lightning in the playoff race, with 122 points in the Atlantic Division. Calling out Samsonov and asking for a goaltending change this publicly means that he's on thin ice.
It has been difficult, as again Samsonov has let in 21 GA in 4 contests recently, which signifies the difficult decision, as Brad Treliving will have to consider a trade to find competent goal-tending in the net.
Or the team will have to waive Samsonov and will they consider their new goal-tending combination, with Joseph Woll and Martin Jones being the new rotation in Toronto?
Samsonov has been shades of what we had hoped he would be in Toronto, as during the 2023-2024 season Samsonov has played 15 games, with 5 wins, 1 shutout, and a 3.94 GAA and a .894% save percentage.
While not quite shades of the goalie situation in Edmonton, you can't help but think of how similar the goaltenders are, suffering from confidence issues.
