Toronto Maple Leafs new General Manager's gameplan for fixing the team will surprise everyone
The Toronto Maple Leafs announced yesterday that they had hired Brad Treliving to be the franchise's 18th General Manager. The hiring didn't come as a surprise to many, as the Leafs had made it clear they were looking for an experienced replacement. Many expected Treliving to come into Toronto and shakeup the core to try and get the Leafs to the next level.
So while Treliving's hiring wasn't a surprise, his rumoured strategy for the team might just be. According to Elliotte Friedman on the recent 32 Thoughts Podcast, Treliving has no intention of breaking up the Core Four.
Friedman on SN says he doesn't think Treliving want to make any changes to the core four, definitely doesn't want to move Marner, believes he wants to make adjustments around them, especially on D. Treliving has a history of drafting and trading for D.
Also says he believes Matthews sincerely wants to stay as well as Marner and Nylander.
This may come as a surprise to many but not to me. It is difficult to believe that any general manager would feel that they couldn't build a better group around the Core Four. Now it seems Treliving feels that exact way, and is willing to take a crack at winning a Cup with this group instead of dismantling it.
Only time will tell if this is the right choice.
