A two-year deal was reportedly agreed upon on the opening of free agency but the situation has gotten extremely murky with the uncertainty of Hakanpaa's health being a major concern. Toronto were believed to have struck a deal with the Finnish defender, pending a physical but additional reports suggest that he may not be physically fit to play in the NHL again.
Following the press conference of the Maple Leafs naming Auston Matthews the 26th captain in franchise history, GM Brad Treliving was asked to comment on the Hakanpaa situation.
Toronto's GM was cautious with his answer, stating that they were "working through" it. With training camps quickly approaching this is likely the best clarity Leafs Nation is going to get on the situation.
if it is deemed that Hakanpaa is unfit to play to begin the season, it will severly weaken the right side of Toronto's defence, a specific area that Treliving wanted to address and did by signing Chris Tanev and the attempted signing of Hakanpaa.
