Earlier this week news leaked that the Toronto Maple Leafs intended on naming Auston Matthews the team's new captain. The news came as a surprise as current Captain John Tavares has one year left on his deal with the Leafs. However, this was viewed as the team's transition towards the future.
This morning the Maple Leafs held a press conference to make it official and during that time they revealed why it was so important to make this decision now. The press conference was attended by Brad Treliving, Matthews and Tavares, all of who spoke and shared details.
During his time Tavares shared that he'd never planned on becoming captain, but was happy to be bestowed the honor. However, Tavares shared that it was now Matthews time to shine.
In a major show of solidarity, the children of Tavares attended the event sporting Auston Matthews' jersey as the announcement was made.
The event was also attended by Maple Leafs players Mitch Marner and Morgan Rielly. Former captains, Doug Gilmour and Wendel Clark also attended the passing of the torch. Keith Pelley, Larry Tannenbaum and Craig Berube were all also in attendance.
