Toronto Maple Leafs' Mark Giordano makes announcement on future
Toronto Maple Leafs General Manager Brad Treliving will have some decisions to make with the teams blueline, including with 40-year-old defenceman Mark Giordano.
Giordano, who joined the Toronto Maple Leafs back in 2022 via a trade with the Seattle Kraken, is set to be an unrestricted free agent on Monday, July 1st and has reportedly made a big decision on his future.
According to Giordano's agent, Rich Winter, the 1,148-game veteran intends on playing in the 2024-25 season, whether that's with the Toronto Maple Leafs or another organization, and isn't ready to hang up his skates yet.
"Mark has made the decision that he's playing for a few more years," said Winter. "He feels very confident. He's been talking to a lot of people who tell him: Don't quit until they make you. He clearly wants to play."
Giordano, a native of Toronto, had a tough season both on and off the ice. He suffered three separate injuries during the regular season and in February, stepped away from the Maple Leafs for a couple of weeks after the passing of his father.
In 46 regular season games, Giordano put up nine points (three goals, six assists), 49 penalty minutes and was a plus-ten. Giordano found himself in the press box for the entirety of their first round series against the Boston Bruins, which Toronto lost in seven games.
When the free agent window opens at Noon ET on Canada Day, Giordano is going to be a name to watch and see if he lands a contract or if he'll have to settle for a professional tryout contract.
