Toronto Maple Leafs sign former captain of rival to PTO
The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed a former captain of one of their rival to a PTO.
After rumours over the last couple of weeks, the Toronto Maple Leafs made the news official on Wednesday morning, signing former Montreal Canadiens captain Max Pacioretty to a professional tryout.
Pacioretty will join up with the Maple Leafs next week for training camp and will play in preseasons games with them before Brad Treliving and the front office decide if they want to sign him to a guaranteed contract for the 2024-25 season.
TSN's Chris Johnston added in a post on X on Wednesday that the expectation is that the Maple Leafs will sign Max Pacioretty to a contract for the 2024-25 season before opening night against the Montreal Canadiens on October 9th.
"Max Pacioretty will attend #leafs training camp on a PTO. Expect him to sign a contract before the season." Johnston said.
Pacioretty, 35, appeared in 47 games last season for the Washington Capitals where he registered 23 points (four goals, 19 assists), 25 penalty minutes and was a minus-14.
The New Canaan, Connecticut native will be given plenty of opportunities during the preseason to show that he's still capable of being an effective player at the NHL level and if the Maple Leafs are satisfied with what they see, then his contract for this year will likely be for one-year around the league minimum of $775,000.
