It's been over two years since Swedish netminder Robin Lehner has appeared in a game for the Vegas Golden Knights after he underwent hip surgery in August 2022. At this point, it's unclear if Robin Lehner will return to professional hockey, but that'll all come down to him and how he's feeling in the coming years.
When the Vegas Golden Knights showed up for medicals and physical testing on Wednesday, Robin Lehner was absent, which was a big shock from the team. After it was reported that Lehner never showed up for his physical, Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli shared that the Golden Knights were considering their options on Robin Lehner, one of which includes terminating his contract, which could make for a messy situation.
Vegas took to the ice for their first day of training camp as they prepare for the 2024-25 campaign. Meanwhile off the ice, General Manager Kelly McCrimmon met with the media and opened up on the Robin Lehner situation.
McCrimmon told reporters that Robin Lehner will not be reporting to the team at all this season because he is unfit to play due to injury. Without getting into too many specifics, he added that the NHL, NHLPA and Golden Knights are looking into the situation to see what the plan is moving forward.
Lehner, 33, appeared in 44 games for the Golden Knights during the 2021-22 season where he had a record of 23-17-2, along with a 2.83 goals against average, a .907 save percentage and one shutout. The Gothenburg native has one year remaining on his contract with a cap hit of $4.5 million.
