Washington Capitals winger Anthony Mantha was having the best game of his season last Wednesday against the Florida Panthers. After scoring two goals earlier in the game, Mantha was hit with some bad luck no pun intended.

With 7:47 remaining in the third period of a 3-3 game, Mantha was struck by an Evgeny Kuznetsov wrist shot that ramped up off of defender Mike Reilly's stick. The puck hit Mantha in the left side of his head near his ear.

After the game the Capitals announced Mantha suffered a suffered an «upper-body injury but no news has surfaced on the severity until today.

Mantha told Tom Gulitti of NHL.com that he ruptured his left ear drum when hit with the deflected shot. Mantha lost hearing for about six days and it's only starting to come back.

Scary situation for Mantha but glad that his hearing is slowly coming back. Mantha's teammate John Carlson suffered an injury from a deflected puck last year, and now wears extra ear protection on that side of his helmet to try and prevent any future injury.

Mantha is hopeful to return to action on Saturday when his Capitals face the Columbus Blue Jackets.
