Back in 1995, the Washington Capitals took a chance on Finnish winger Miika Elomo, whom they drafted with the No. 23 overall selection that season with incredibly high hopes.
Unfortunately, he would go on to play just two games with the team before heading overseas, ending his playing career in the SM-Liiga in 2005 after over 10 years as a professional hockey player.
On Sunday, it was announced that the 47-year old had tragically passed, with the NHL and wider hockey community showing their love and respect for Elomo after his many stints all over Europe and North America.
Since retiring from active competition, Elomo had many stints behind the bench in Europe, as he was currently in the midst of a run coaching Cergy-Pontoise in the top level competition in France before his untimely and shocking passing was announced over the weekend.
Since the news was broken, tributes have poured in all over social media for the beloved coach, and while he never became a star in the NHL, playing just two games for the Capitals, it's clear that he garnered the respect of fans and opponents throughout his time on the ice and behind the bench.
We take this time to send our deepest condolences to Elomo's family, friends, current team, former teammates and anyone that was lucky enough to know the Finnish star, and we hope that in this difficult time, they find joy in the memory he has brought them all.
