There was a lot going on when the Winnipeg Jets hosted the the Minnesota Wild yesterday, so much do that the National Hockey Leagues Department of Player safety has been busy, first setting a hearing with Wild forward Ryan Hartman for his dangerous hit and then announcing the punishment for Jets defender Neal Pionk

The DoPS has handed out a 5,000 dollar fine to Pionk for the cross-check he delivered on Marcus Johansson, take a look:

Winnipeg's Neal Pionk has been fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the CBA, for Cross-checking against Minnesota's Marcus Johansson.

Pionk skated behind Johansson and cross-checked him along the lower part of the rib cage where there is little to no protection. Johansson Crumbled to the ice in pain while Pionk was assessed a two minute penalty on the play.

This was clearly an intent to injure incident, it seems like the DoPS let Pionk off easy on this one. However, every incident is judged independently it seems, meaning you never know why a punishment is handed out the way that it is.
