Martin Necas' name is likely off the trade block, for now, after news came down on Monday afternoon that he agreed to terms on a two-year deal worth $13 million ($6.5 million AAV) with the Carolina Hurricanes.
Several teams had been linked with the Carolina Hurricanes forward for the last couple of months and one of those teams was the Winnipeg Jets.
The Winnipeg Jets have been looking to add scoring punch to their lineup, especially after losing Tyler Toffoli and Sean Monahan on the opening day of the NHL's free agency period earlier this month.
In an effort to acquire Martin Necas, Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli is reporting that Winnipeg Jets General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff sent an offer to the Carolina Hurricanes that included a pair of former first-rounders - Rutger McGroarty (2022) and Cole Perfetti (2020), along with a draft pick. Ultimately, the Jets weren't able to land the 25-year-old forward.
That would have been a lot to give up from the Winnipeg Jets' perspective, but it just shows the lengths they're willing to go to land an elite goal-scoring forward, who is coming off back-to-back seasons with 20+ goals - 28 in 2022-23 and 24 in 2023-24.
Rutger McGroarty was arguably the most interesting piece involved on the Jets' side of things. The Jets' 2022 first-rounder reportedly wanted to sign his entry-level contract and join the team in April and basically be promised a path to playing time, but Winnipeg had other plans for his development.
It'll be interesting to monitor the situation from both sides in the coming months. Although it's more unlikely that he's dealt before the start of the 2024-25 campaign, Martin Necas would be a solid fit for the Winnipeg Jets, but it looks like it'll come with a hefty price tag.
