After years of rumors, the long rumoured banning of fighting in Canadian Junior Hockey has now begun. After the COVID-19 pandemic a Quebec MP had made it clear, if the league was going to continue to receive provincial funding, they'd be forced to ban fighting.

After finally pushing through legislation the province of Quebec has finally forced the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League to ban fighting, something the league had pushed back on.

The new rules will officially take effect next season and will impose the following changes:

Change rules for fights

Automatic ejection for a fight instead of a major and a 10 minutes

Automatic 1 game suspension for an instigator

Two-game suspension for an aggressor.

The QMJHL becomes the first Canadian Hockey League team to ban fighting, as both the Ontario and Western Hockey League's have opposed the change. While this change won't fully remove fighting from the game, it will make it less common.

But the real question becomes, will the game truly be safer because of it?
