Barkov was in a footrace with Senators forward Tim Stutzle as he was attempting to defend against the empty-net goal. Unfortunately, he lost the race as Stutzle just got the puck into the net. More importantly though, Barkov ended up colliding violently with the end boards feet-first.
This was truly an unlucky situation for Barkov. He was trying to do the right thing, but came out worse for it as he appeared to be in a lot of pain. His stick breaking ultimately lead to this play as well, which only adds to the bad luck. Ultimately, he had to be helped off the ice thanks to his teammates and trainer.
After he got to the bench, Barkov immediately went down the tunnel towards the locker room despite the fact that there was just seconds left in the game. This would seem to indicate that his injury could be rather serious.
With any luck, this incident simply looked worse than it really was. The Panthers most likely will not be able to update us on his status tonight though, so be sure to stay tuned for updates tomorrow morning. Head coach Paul Maurice already confirmed that they are still looking at him and could potentially provide an update tomorrow.
