Alexander Ovechkin gives away a piece of hockey history to make a young fan's day
On Tuesday night, Alexander Ovechkin scored a hat-trick against the Chicago Blackhawks. The 3rd goal of Ovi's night marked the 800th goal in his NHL career, making Ovechkin one of only 3 players to ever hit this mark. Ovechkin joins the 800 Goals Club with Gordie Howe (801) and Wayne Gretzky (894).
After the game ended as Ovechkin was leaving the ice, instead of handing his stick to the team's equipment manager. Ovechkin opted to pass off his game used stick to a young fan in attendance. While this is obviously not the stick Ovechkin scored his 800th goal with, it is still a piece of hockey history.
You can tell by the pure elation on this young fan's face, how much this gesture meant to him. Ovechkin was in no way obligated to give this young fan his stick, but because Ovechkin cares so much about his fans, he always wants to make a young fans day. This is just another reason that Ovechkin is viewed as such a class act among those who know him.
