When the Boston Bruins signed Mitchell Miller they likely expected a couple days of bad press in exchange for adding a significant prospect to their prospect pool. What they received was a backlash they could have likely never planned for. What they felt was a good idea, ultimately ended up as one of the biggest black eyes in franchise history.

Despite claiming they'd thoroughly vetted Miller, more information began to leak out yesterday debunking some of the work they'd claimed they'd done. Ultimately the Bruins decided to terminate the contract of Miller late Sunday night. The Bruins issued a statement at the time, but also made it clear that Cam Neely would speak this morning.

During his time Neely mentioned what he determined to be the biggest issue with the signing.

Q: What was the "new information?"

Neely: The fact that we didn't talk to the family was concerning to me.

Q: Why didn't you?

Neely: That's a great question, something I need to find out.

Q: Is this a problem with the vetting process?

Neely: Absolutely.

According to Neely the biggest issue for the Bruins was the organizations failure to contact the family of Miller's victim. When asked about potential punishments for members of the organization for this situation he provided the following information:

That's something I have to deal with today and this week and see where it takes me.

It's clear at this point the Bruins organization has a significant amount of rehabilitation for their reputation to take part in at this time. But one thing is for certain, the NHL likely needs to develop policies to put in place to prevent situations like this in the future.
