The Boston Bruins received an early Christmas present today when it was announced that Brad Marchand will make his season debut for the Bruins against the Red Wings on Thursday, according to Boston coach Jim Montgomery.

"We have exciting news. No. 63 is going to play tonight,"
Montgomery said.

Marchand, 34, underwent an offseason surgical repair of both of his hips. Originally, he was projected to miss six months, a timeline that would've placed his return around Thanksgiving.

Marchand will slide onto a line with longtime teammate Patrice Bergeron, as well as Jake DeBrusk. Montgomery noted that Marchand will not play in back-to-back games early, meaning that he won't travel with the team for Friday's matchup in Columbus against the Blue Jackets.

Marchand led Boston with 80 points (32 goals, 48 assists) in his 70 games last season. He added another 11 points (four goals, seven assists) in seven postseason games. He's led the Bruins in points in each of the last two seasons.
